This week in whatever / San Francisco, CA / 15 months ago

Between meetings in Mountain View, random conference calls and playing pool, the weekend is finally here. Last night Dara and had dinner with some friends at The Front Porch which I definitely recommend if you get a chance to go.

Today I was a bit hungover, so I talked to Joe for a bit on ichat, walked the dog with Peter and am about to head over to Calumet Photo with Derick to look around at camera gear.

Tonight I am going to 3131 Clement for the Stereo Sound Agency 15 year anniversary event. I'm planning to take some cameras along and will hopefully get a chance to shoot of the festivities. When I saw that Chuck Treece and Ray Barbee were going to be playing there, I started digging around on YouTube for some videos that I haven't seen in over 15 years, like this clip from Public Domain.

I think the plan tomorrow is to head over to Giants stadium to watch the Giants play Arizona.

Making the switch from WinXP to Mac OS / San Francisco, CA / 16 months ago

After setting myself up in the previous post, I have compiled a short, opinionated list of software that I used to use on WinXP and the comparable software that I now use on Mac OS X. Of course some of the feature sets are not 1 for 1 on the switch, but the tools I have found for Mac OS X have been sufficient in letting me leave Windows behind.

The real enabler for me was when Parallels release 3170 dropped, which allowed me to load my legacy Boot Camp partition inside of Parallels. This gave me a sense of comfort in that I didn't have to completely rebuild my Windows VM on the Mac side, but instead I could load my "comfort zone" OS inside of a new VM and everything would be just as I left it. The reality here is that I almost never load Parallels, but the idea that I easily could geve me enough confidence to make the switch.
So, without blathering on about my control issues, here's the list:

I am certainly always open to other suggestions if anyone thinks that there are better tools out there than the ones I have found, so if you have any other recommendations or maybe something that I left off the list... feel free to send me an email. Please address emails to the "nonsense" mailbox here at blather.org or my work address which is the "src" mailbox at cubancouncil.com.

Update: Let me explain the IE7 -> Parallels a bit more... since Firefox is direct to Firefox and Safari/Camino are on their own, the point I am trying to make is that if I NEED IE7 for testing I can simply load Parallels to use the actual browser natively. Sorry, I thought people would make the web develoment association and figure that one out.

More empty promises / San Francisco, CA / 16 months ago

I have this goal to write up a nice little list of utilities and apps for Mac OS X people who have recently migrated from Windows or who plan to in the near future. I can tell you that my conversion didn't come easy as I had made my first failed attempt back in September and then didn't try again until this March, the second try being successful. I think that the second time around I had more information about "replacement" utlities that I was comfortable working with along with more of a desire to get off of Windows.

Either way, I am going to try to get something together here soon and hopefully provide others with the resources they need to better their lives. I will tell you this much, once I stabalized on my Mac I was shocked at how fast, easy and productive life could be.

Okay, enough evangelism... tonight I am going with Jason to meet up with EJ from Iron & Wine to talk about redoing their website.

Jacob DeHart told me that if I removed Google AdWords from my site that I would restore my dignity. He also said that he would give me $20 to make up for my personal financial loss.
"Jacob, it's great to have my dignity back, now where's my effin' Andrew Jackson!"
